Buffalo Bayou Partnership worked with Harris County Precinct Two and other governmental agencies to acquire and develop this abandoned industrial property in Houston’s East End into a natural green space, now known as the Yolanda Black Navarro Buffalo Bend Nature Park. The property has been transformed from a construction fill site to a beautiful park that features three wetland ponds, a cistern, native plantings, pond overlook, interpretive signage and hike and bike trails. Buffalo Bend Nature Park is a much needed trailhead along Buffalo Bayou’s east sector and an important environmental education site for neighborhood school children. BBP is working to connect the County’s Yolanda Black Navarro Buffalo Bend Nature Park to the City of Houston’s Hidalgo Park to the east. In addition to a property and easement already acquired, another property is needed to complete this connection that will result in 23 acres of continuous open space.
This park was named in memory of Yolanda Black Navarro, a committed civic leader who served Houston for decades. She founded the Association for the Advancement of Mexican-Americans and received numerous accolades for her leadership in the East End. Yolanda left a distinctive and memorable mark in this city.
